Bion considers projective identification as the earliest form of communication of the baby with his mother. The mother, with her capacity of reverie, contains those primitive anxieties and fears and pains projected on her, then transforms them into something tolerable and gives back to the baby. The infant thus finds space for symbolizing material belonging to primitive consciousness. In this paper, this process has been reviewed in terms of the relationship between the baby-mother and the analysand- analyst in the light of Bion and other theorists / authors' thoughts; also the importance of the reverie function has been emphasized.
