Freud considered the dream to be “the royal way” to access the Unconscious.
The primary language of the dream is made up of a succession of images ignoring contradiction and verbal syntax. It expresses, in fact, this register of our psyche which we can qualify as primary symbolisation. The dream is not only “sleep guardian” as Freud thought, but it certainly has a vital function in our psychic survival: a function of recharging and restitution. Wilfred Bion went so far as to say that dreams were the primary, prototypical form of our thinking activity.
