Death drive is one of the most enigmatic Freudian concepts. While he introduces this concept as living organisms' natural tendency to withdraw from chaotic burden of life on the one hand, he uses the same concept as embedded in the destructivity of humankind on the other. For a century, much effort has been made to grasp the mystery of this concept, which has led to both a deeper understanding of the metapsychology of psychoanalysis and the emergence of new psychoanalytic concepts. Following this tradition of creative thinking over death drive, İlker Özyıldırım has presented two papers as a series in Psychoanalytic Writings (2019 and 2020), called “Death Drive as the Precipitate of Trauma ı-ıı ”. He has used the concept of death drive to both present a better understanding of traumatic experience and its transgenerational inheritance. This paper aimed both to elaborate his original thinking by discussing his new perspective and to use his text to present a debate over issues relevant to concept of death drive such as universality, sadism, and masochism.
