Through his work, Ferenczi opened the way for what would later be termed psychosomatics. By linking certain somatic illnesses to the characteristics of the psychical structure of his patients, he showed the impact that narcissistic faults, unbinding drives and primary trauma could have. He also opened the way concerning the manner of working with such patients.
