Ferenczi did not hesitate to make peculiar technical interventions when he encountered difficulties in his clinical work. For example, he encouraged or discouraged his analysands for certain actions in order to enable unconscious content to emerge in the psychoanalytical work. He promoted relaxation and childishness as a route to unconscious. He tried to get honesty and sincerity into the psychoanalytic work with analysands who had intense traumatic histories. The echoes of these peculiar approaches, which resulted in a differentiation between Ferenczi and Freud, can be heard in the discussions regarding neutrality, frustration, treatment, trauma, breakdown and representation throughout the history of psychoanalysis.
