This paper deals with the link established between the baby and the mother during development of baby and baby’s experiences in mother’s physical and/or psychical absence, with reference to Esther Bick and infant observation process. With vignettes from observations and sessions, reactions of babies and patients against absence are illustrated. It is attempted to understand how the baby (and the patient) copes with primitive anxieties through denial of dependency on the mother and development of pseudo-independence.
