This article aims to take a closer look at paternal function and and the internal world of fathers during the pre-oedipal period. The mental state of the mothers and the mother-infant relationship has been adressed upon through multiple perspectives by many writers. However as Colette Chiland states in her article “A New Look at Fathers”: “A newborn cannot exist only with his mother. There is no mother-baby duality without a father somewhere”. The Father is an indispensable building block for the healthy formation of mental development. Both his existence and his absence are very effective in the formation and development of human psychology. If the father cannot adopt his fatherhood within the early years, the child's experience of paternal functions will be insufficient and damaged. Father is not a mother just like a mother is not a father. They do not replace each other, they complement one another. Motherhood and fatherhood need to co-exist with their differences. The father should be existing in the mother's mind as her accompanyist and support since the beginning of the process so that he can begin adopting his fatherhood at the earliest period possible. Just as the woman who will become a mother, a man's journey of becoming a father is unique. Looking into his internal world throughout this journey in order to understand him in more depth is as valuable as the mother's. Eventually, the father is the one who is more lonely, who is left out and he also needs support.
