Dear Friends,
We appear to be unanimous in our attitude towards Rank, for I have heard on the subject from all members of the Committee except Ferenczi, and I am sure that his attitude would be as cordial as the rest.
Last month Miss Searl read a paper before the Society on the possibility or advisability of making conscious to the young child the whole of the Oedipus Complex. The discussion aroused so much interest that it was decided to hold a Symposium at the next meeting.2 This took place last week, the rapporteurs being Mrs. Rivière, James Glover and myself. We were unanimously of the opinion that Miss Searl's doubts were due to unanalysed resistances. Mr Strachey was able to give us at the same time a resume of a similar discussion which has apparently taken place at the Berlin Society, and today I hear that Melanie Klein is also reading her paper before the Vienna Society. I understand that opinion were divided in Berlin, Alexander Radó being to opposed to Abraham, and I should be very interested to have a fuller or more authentic account of the situation. After making two attempts at suicide, one by laudanum and the other by cutting the radial artery, Frink has been certified as insane and is at present in the Waverley Hospital, Massachusetts.3
The first meeting of the »Institute of Psycho-Analysis«, which replaces the old Press, took place last week. Membership of it is confined to the medical members of the Society (full, not associate) who are fourteen in all. The Board of Directors is composed of Bryan, James Glover, Rickman (Secretary) and myself (President). There is some prospect of its starting a clinic in the none too distant future, for a certain sum of money may become available from the Trustees of the old Brunswick Square clinic, and we are forming a Committee to discuss the matter.
