Dear Friends,
The Reik affair has evoked universal sympathy here. I suppose the case will not be finished before the vacation, but if so we should be very glad of a word of news about it as we have no other source of information. Yesterday Rickman obtained his Doctorate at the University of Cambridge. Very few of our medical members have a Doctorate degree. Our chief reason for congratulation, however, is that the thesis was a definitely psycho-analytic one, a psycho-analytic explanation of prolapsus uteri with a full case report of an analysis and a general review of the medical literature.2
The opposition keeps breaking on us in successive waves. McDougall's last book on Abnormal Psychology3 is very heated and led to excited headlines in the daily press. They made use of the same opportunity for a violent diatribe by a psychiatrist. Sir Robert Armstrong-Jones4, against the immorality of psycho-analysis, which appeared in the Contemporary Review. The British Medical Association, at its meeting this month, appointed a Committee of investigation into psycho-analysis. Most disappointing of all is the fact that C. S. Myers5, F.R.S., the leading psychologist in England and President of the last International Congress of Psychology, has turned against us and written an angry and unfair article in the Lancet.6 He has thus followed the path of his old personal friends, Rivers and McDougall: approach followed by violent repulsion. I suspect in his case a motive may have been personal jealousy. He is an active Jew
