With this first issue of 1988 the Rivista di Psicoanalisi, organ of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society, has carried out its project of an Italian-English bilingual edition.
We think this will prove useful for those who wish to broaden their knowledge of Italian psychoanalysis, and more particularly, to assess the effects that the grafting of psychoanalysis onto the culture, the language and the socio-historical conditions of our country has had on psychoanalytic thought itself; the effects, moreover, of the ways in which psychoanalysis has been introduced, and further filtered, elaborated and developed in Italy, and of the geography of the I.P.S. organization.
However, we believe, above all, that we are doing something useful for Italian analysts, who, when contributing to the Rivista, will now be able to address the international psychoanalytic community directly and to bear the full responsibility involved in reciprocal communication. Thus progress will be made towards the thorough internationalization of thought. Furthermore, this initiative of ours intends to acknowledge indirectly the importance of the long, discreet training work which several foreign analysts were already carrying out in the 1960s, through analyses, supervisions and seminars, collaborating with many of us and forming ties of mutual friendship and respect.
