Herbert Rosenfeld's Impasse and Interpretation is at the same time a sort of final assessment and a scientific testament by one of the most qualified members of the English School of psychoanalysis. Publishers Bollati-Boringhieri will issue in 1989 an Italian edition of the book, which was published posthumously at the beginning of 1987. Rosenfeld had died in London on 29th November, 1986, after a short illness. Those who could attend the seminars he held in his late years will remember the care he devoted to the composition of these chapters. Rosenfeld was not as prolific an author as other equally famed psychoanalysts. His only other work had been Psychotic States, an enlarged selection of his major essays he had prepared for the Hogarth Press. That single anthology, however, was enough to make him one of the most widely read, and followed, Kleinian psychoanalysts in the whole Freudian movement, and helped perhaps to make - malgré lui - a myth of him.
