“Professor Matte Blanco's eightieth birthday has provided an opportunity for common reflection among all those who feel they share Matte Blanco's ideas or who simply feel stimulated by them”. These sentiments are expressed by P. Bria in the introduction to the collective work Il pensiero e l'infinito: this is a collection of articles focussing on the thought of Matte Blanco. In his comprehensive introduction to the work, Bria himself provides some essential guidelines which enable those who are not personally familiar with Matte Blanco's works to understand their structure, their close kinship with the thought of Freud and the way they develop towards the concept of the infinite. Matte Blanco, who is the source of the inspiration of this book, is also its coauthor. Indeed he wrote the last chapter in the work: an excursus into the continent of female sexuality, in the light of bi-logic. With tireless rigour, Matte Blanco describes the complex processes underlying certain feelings characteristic of female psychology. This can at times tire the reader and make him wish to stop reading, but Matte Blanco seems to be aware of this: he empathically identifies with the reader who is having problems and imagines him objecting: “It's absurd to think that penis envy can be the result of such artificial and strained reasoning (…)”, but he then adds: “Considering what has been said as a whole, he (the reader) can regain the immediacy of felt emotion”: indeed, the complex intertwining and expression of the two modes of thought leads finally to the holistic apprehension of a phenomenon, whose many co-existant contradictory dimensions become apparent and can be guessed in a dizzy crescendo. In my opinion, this is the most fascinating and significant aspect of Matte Blanco's work: to have focussed and tirelessly studied the relationship in the mind
