As would-be participant in this panel I have reflected at length on the theme of psychic change. Four ideas have occurred to me: 1) the relationship between change and reparation; 2) spontaneous change, without the aid of psychoanalysis or even without psychotherapy; 3) fear of change in the course of analytic treatment; 4) structural change and the idealisation thereof. Since the first two points have not been mentioned in any of the papers presented at this Congress, I will not dwell on them, although of course I am willing to discuss them if anyone is interested in listening to me. I wish only to mention the second point (spontaneous change) briefly, since in his comprehensive paper Garcia Badaraco(1) speaks of a type of patient who is an expert at not changing.
