The paper has an important contribution to psychoanalytic understanding of psychic economics and dynamics of certain religious practices that imply direct, immediate, tangible experience. Matei Georgescu refinedly examines the psychoanalytic correlations of this type of experience. Ever since Freud, the psychoanalytic writings have revealed descriptions of psychic phenomena inherent to the meditation state. The author thus mentions “the oceanic feeling” of fusion connected to intrauterine life, of which Freud says it's typical to the absorption experience in Zazen, by the orientation of the libido towards the ego. The author points out that returning to a narcissist state induced by disconnecting from the external reality and by focusing on one's body, triggers archaic schizophrenic type processes and finally melancholy.
