An amazing paper! - How could I not love it if when I first read it I asked myself: how much do I love psychoanalysis?
A famous and fabulous song-lyric belonging to Ray Charles almost immediately came to my mind: “I can't stop loving you … it's out of my mind …”
“Out of my mind” - meaning “I'm not in my right mind” made me think forth to the conscious and unconscious levels of the complex process of loving - love… The next step is existent to an inevitable object of love. We could then rephrase and ask ourselves: What psychoanalyst do we love? Are there any parental figures (personal analyst, supervisor, teacher) involved and most important how are they involved during the training period as candidate?
The set of legitimate and necessary questions that Gábor Szönyi places in the first part of his paper is a self-questioning that every practitioner of psychoanalysis or psychotherapy should carry out every now and then throughout his/her life. The debate on the right of the psychoanalyst or psychotherapist to assert him/herself as a professional with a certain specificity or independently is also present in Romania (psychologists, psychiatrists and other humanistic professions) even though it is sometimes made through denial and without being officially accepted per se in many countries from Western and Eastern Europe. As a matter of fact, at least in Romania, we often come across the situation in which a psychoanalyst or a psychotherapist also has a second job in addition to therapies with patients. Does this mean that he/she loves psychoanalysis less?
