The present translation is based on that of 1924.
This was written during the late autumn of 1923. It is an application of the new hypotheses put forward in The Ego and the Id to the particular question of the genetic difference between neuroses and psychoses. This same discussion was carried further in another paper, written a few months after the present one, ‘The Loss of Reality in Neurosis and Psychosis’ (1924e), p. 183 below. The roots of the matter were already under discussion by Freud in Section III of his first paper on ‘The Neuro-Psychoses of Defence’ (1894a).
