The present translation is a very slightly corrected reprint of the one published in 1950.
This paper, published early in 1928, was written, according to Ernest Jones (1957, 151), at the end of 1927. Viereck's visit to Freud which was the starting-point of the events leading to the writing of the paper took place, as Jones tells us (Standard Ed., 133), in late June of 1926. Viereck (a fairly well known American journalist who had an interest in psycho-analysis) published his account of the visit in the autumn of the following year. It was reprinted in a volume, Glimpses of the Great (1930, 28 ff.), and some extracts from it are given by Jones (loc. cit.).
