The present translation of Freud's letter is a corrected version of that published in 1950. Einstein's letter is included here by permission of his executors and at their request is given in the original English version by Stuart Gilbert. Part of the German text of Freud's letter was published in Psychoanal. Bewegung, 5 (1933), 207-16. Part of the English translation of 1933 was included in Rickman's Civilization, War and Death: Selections from Three Works by Sigmund Freud (1939), 82-97.
