Stephen Mitchell's (1978, 1981) two papers on homosexuality are examined in an attempt to identify the origins of the major concerns that he addresses in his subsequent work. This reading focuses on how Mitchell's early concerns with the pernicious effects of the psychoanalyst's unexamined influence and authority evolve into an ethic of psychoanalytic practice that centers on, as antitodes to the former, inquiry and authenticity.
