It examines the encoding of national identity in and through name, accent, dress, history, cinematic representation, and the filtering of all through the clinical encounter. Material from cultural studies, which has long appropriated psychoanalytical theory for its analyses, is repurposed so that cultural studies may be engaged as a tool in the clinical setting. Homi Bhabha's (1994) exploration of land or nation as a recurrent metaphor for identity informs my inquiry as I explore ways to denaturalize the rhetoric of national affiliation.
