This paper describes a Kanien´kehá:ka (Mohawk) psychologist’s journey to understand how her cultural belief system could possibly be compatible with western psychoanalytic theory. She explores her spirituality, community relationships, and traditional ways of considering dreams and their meanings. After learning that some of the early theorists had spent time with Native American people, she attempts to weave together the ancient belief system she grew up with and the newer knowledge of psychoanalytic theory. She then attempts to develop a better understanding of psychoanalytic theories in a cultural context.
