X’ing Psychoanalysis: Being LatinX in Psychoanalysis

Dr. Chakira M. Haddock-Lazala obtained her doctorate in clinical psychology from the New School for Social Research and completed a postdoctoral clinical fellowship at the Program for Psychotherapy at Cambridge Health Alliance–Harvard Medical School. She is a Puerto Rican liberation psychologist and artist based out of Bronx, NY, who is passionate about mental health, social justice, and the development of holistic, multilingual, socially conscious therapies. Her scholarly and artistic work uses psychoanalysis as a foundation to explore the vicissitudes of identity, language, and humanity in a context of oppression, colonization, and slavery (and aims toward liberation). As an activist, she is best known for her community organizing and co-constructing what she calls “free speech zones”—times and spaces in which people come together to experience the healing and liberatory potential of free thought, free speech, and the power of the spoken word.
