For this piece I built a wall on top of the original wall of the gallery and wrote down the name of every person who influenced me, artistically and as a person, from childhood to the present, on the new wall. The names included authors, painters, movie and rock stars, and photographers, among others, and spanned across languages and nationalities. Using white Apple computer cable, iPhone, and telephone and Ethernet wire, as well as hooks, nails, staples, and cable clips, I connected one name to another—chronologically—as I discovered them on the Internet and social media. As I connected one name to the next, I became entangled in the wires. Over time became nearly impossible to free myself—literally and figuratively—from the wall of names. Channeling Atlas, I used all the strength I had to break free, and in doing so tore down bits and pieces of the wall of names I had painstakingly constructed.
