The Asian white romantic pair/figure stirs psychic and affective disturbances in the gazer. I theorize that these disturbances are evoked by three distinct but related confrontations: incest and miscegenation prohibitions, oedipal rivalries of love and race, and this figure experienced as a “visual racial slur.” Regardless of the nature, composition, or force of these disturbances in the gazer, splitting occurs. The Asian white romantic pair is either pathologized and condemned or this pair is celebrated and accepted as a symbol of a postracial, colorblind world. I note that this binary split is also reflected in our psychoanalytic thinking and practice, foreclosing a deeper exploration of the Asian white romantic figure that might provide us with more nuanced understandings of race, racialization, and race relations. I offer a couple of personal anecdotes and scenes from the movie Past Lives as vignettes to illustrate my thinking and the potentialities of a deeper exploration of the Asian white romantic figure.
