Beginning with a discussion of Asian American stereotypes related to studiousness and sexuality, this paper discusses the many adverse learning experiences of Asian American students in psychoanalytic learning environments in the context of disturbances in the free flow of erotic charge that such learning requires. Using Lynne Harkless’s concept of desire identifications, and extending Adele Tutter’s work on the erotics of knowing, the obstacles to the development of a psychoanalytic identity are articulated in terms of an eroticism that is hampered from its pairings with psychoanalytic learning. The unique experience of teaching in an environment that centers Asian American subjectivities, The Asian American Center for Psychoanalysis, is explored, and recommendations are made for faculty in mainstream psychoanalytic learning environments to support Asian American students in cultivating a psychoanalytic identity.
