When an American psychoanalytic institute canceled a transgender-focused lecture in early 2025, the institutional response exemplified “Cisteria”: the panic when transgender existence challenges psychoanalytic authority. As a Chinese transgender candidate experiencing this environmental failure, I analyze this crisis through Winnicott’s framework of false self-compliance and true self-emergence. Drawing on Chinese cultural contexts that systematically foreclosed transgender language and experience, I examine how overlapping environmental failures necessitated sophisticated defensive adaptations. The institutional “Cis-teria” paradoxically shattered my idealized investment in Western psychoanalytic institutions, creating space for authentic mourning work previously impossible under false self-organization. Through creative collaboration with AI (Suno AI) on Enough: A Trans Dreamplay, I constructed transitional space for processing ungrievable losses while developing new symbolic vocabularies for previously unthinkable experiences. This case study demonstrates how institutional trauma can catalyze movement from defensive compliance to authentic self-expression when adequate alternative holding becomes available, while highlighting the limitations of individual solutions to systematic environmental problems requiring structural change.
