In this article, the author seeks to utilize a psychoanalytic lens to explore cisgender anxieties surrounding pronouns in politics and media, particularly “they/them.” The author posits that they/them pronouns elicit “unthinkable anxieties” in the cisgender subject and utilizes examples from clinical practice and their own experience as an Asian American transfeminine psychoanalytic psychotherapist to demonstrate the impacts these anxieties have on transgender and/or nonbinary subjects. Lastly, the author draws on alternate methods of transgender and/or nonbinary survival by speculating on intersectional theories of “bad trans objects” and “ornamentalism.”
