Beyond the Room: Psychoanalysis, Freedom, and the Defense of Childhood in Authoritarian Times

Psychoanalysis has always wrestled with the tension between freedom and authority. Yet its practice has often been confined to bounded rooms where movement, play, and spontaneity are constrained. This paper calls for a renewal of psychoanalysis through the integration of hybrid settings in child and adolescent therapy, where risk, play, and freedom can fully unfold. Drawing on Freud, Winnicott, Bion, Alvarez, and Fromm, I argue that play is not incidental but central to psychic life—the crucible in which autonomy, resistance, and gendered subjectivities are forged. Observation in expansive settings makes visible aspects of self and desire that the consulting room too often obscures, turning analytic attention itself into a political act: a defense of the small freedoms through which children and adolescents practice resistance. In authoritarian times, when childhood is increasingly monitored and constrained, psychoanalysis must reclaim its radical commitment to freedom. To move beyond the room is not only to sustain its relevance but to align the discipline with the struggle for gender, justice, and the defense of childhood.
