This transcript records the event of Hortense J. Spillers’s delivery of the Psychology and the Other conference’s 2025 keynote address. The address engages the work of Frantz Fanon as establishing a fictional representation of the “negro of the Antilles.” It attempts to rethink Black fatherhood and Black oedipal relation through an expansive restructuring that supplements the ostensibly absent vertical generational authority of blackness with a horizontal relationality. The event’s audience, its presider, Sheldon George, and its respondents, Aliyyah Abdur-Rahman and Derek Hook, engage Hortense Spillers in a wide-ranging discussion. Topics extend from reconceptualization of Freud, Fanon, Black fatherhood, and the Oedipus complex itself to discussion and critique of figures of patriarchal authority, from Nelson Mandela to Donald Trump.
