The 5th Scandinavian Psychoanalytical Congress was held in Saltsjöbaden, Sweden, on August 12-15, 1976. 110 members and candidates of the Scandinavian Psychoanalytical Societies gathered to discuss cases, and exchange ideas about the theme “Psychoanalytical theories of female development”. The congress was generally appreciated for its stimulating lectures, its small group discussions and the favorable conditions under which collegues could meet. One of the inauguration speakers was Professor Widlöcher, then secretary of the IPA, and he addressed the congress on the subject of the increasing regional cooperation of psychoanalysts in Europe, and dealt with the plans of the IPA to publish a monograph series on psychoanalytical topics and with the inquiries into social secutity questions conducted by the IPA.
During the congress all eight scientific papers were presented in the plenary sessions. Bo Larsson introduced the congress theme with “Psychoanalytical theories of the development of women - a historical survey” in which he presented alternative theories distinguishing first between psychoanalytical and non-psychoanalytical concepts and then between mainly Freudian, neo-Freudian and Kleinian theories. He stressed the importance of recognizing the principal differences between different types of theories and put forward some arguments in favour of the Freudian theories. This paper was followed by reflections on the differences and similarities between male and female sexuality
