The VI Nordic Conference of Psychoanalysis was held on August 17th through 20th, 1978, in the Forest Lake Hotel about 20 kilometres from Helsinki. The number of participants was high, about 150 active members and candidates from all Nordic Societies attending. The first day, Thursday, in the afternoon, was reserved for registration. The Candidate Society and the Nordic joint committee with four representatives from each Nordic society held their meetings on Thursday. In the evening a welcoming dinner was scheduled for all participants.
“The psychoanalytic process in the treatment of narcissistic and borderline pathology” was the main theme of the Conference. The program on Friday, August 18th, began with small groups discussing clinical material from analysis of patients suffering from narcissistic or borderline pathology. On Friday morning Veikko Tähkä, Finland, gave his paper “On possibilities to apply the psychoanalytic theory in the treatment of various grades of psychopathology” making a distinct differentiation between the interpretative work which is of central importance in the therapy of neurotic disturbances and the psychotherapy based on psychoanalytical knowledge which is applied in the treatment of psychic disturbances of more severe degree. The possibilities of interpretative work in the last-mentioned has often been over-estimated.
