In the Swedish Psychoanalytic Society, there has evolved a need for changes in the different activities. A consulting visit in spring 1982 stimulated a more open discussion on how to change the scientific climate in order to get more members to participate in the scientific meetings and to encourage psychoanalytic research.
As scientific secretary, I have found that one must have long-range goals for a scientific program to be meaningful to the members. In order to realize this there are different possibilities. One is that the scientific secretary during the second of his or her two years at work should cooperate with the secretary elect. There must be a stable continuity in order to create a program of high standard. Another possibility is that the scientific secretary has a committee of 2-3 persons to help with the work as new tasks in the future might be a part of the goals. Consulting visits inspired new ideas, among others to arrange seminars for associate members to help them gain full membership. These seminars could also be open to members. Hopefully this could be a contributory part in stimulating the scientific activities.
In spring 1982, the theme for the program was “Child analysis” and in autumn “Psychoanalysis and psychosomatic”.
