During the past few years, three books written by the Swiss psychoanalyst Alice Miller have been published in a Swedish translation by one and the same publishing-house, Wahlström & Widstrand Bokförlag, Stockholm. They are, using their German titles: “Das Drama des begabten Kindes und die Suche nach dem wahren Selbst” (1980); “Am Anfang war Erziehung” (1982); “Du sollst nicht merken” (1983).
That a publishing-house publishes three books by one and the same author might be a sign of their high qualities. Regarding the situation nowadays for book publishers, it is probably more a sign of the fact that the books are good sellers.
Many readers have also testified to the great emotional impact the books have made upon them. They seem to be on the top-ten list among psychology students, therapists, social workers and family counsellors. Not the least, they are popular among persons in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis as well as among newspapers to which they give sensational material for series of articles. The following remark from a therapy patient is probably expressive of this impact: “Read them and you will know my situation and how to treat me!”
Parenthetically, this interest is not mirrored by psychoanalytic journals. In English speaking journals available to me, I have up till now found two reviews and they concern the first one of the books (Gut 1980, Sharkow (1982).
