In 1987, the Finnish Psychoanalytic Society had its 20-year aniversary. In the afternoon celebration, the main address was given by Pentti Ikonen (published in this issue). A new honorary member of the society, Mrs. Pearl King from Great Britain, also attended and she received an honorary diploma. Mrs. King, a member of the sponsoring committee for the Finnish study group in the sixties, has, in an essential way, contributed to the establishment of the Finnish psychoanalytic society. The speech she gave at the banquet also icluded memories of these years. Annastina Rilton from the Swedish society and Hjalmar Havnegjerde from the Norwegian society presented congratulations.
The total number of members at this 20th aniversary year is 107. There are 17 training analysts, 4 members have qualifications for child-analysis; 42 candidates are in training. A training course for child analysis, which started in 1984 ended this year, 5 members participating.
The activities of the Finnish Society have continued as before with scientific meetings and training. Eagle and Moses Laufer, Vamik Volkan and Erna and Robert Furman have visited the society. It has become almost an established routine that these psychoanalytic collegues from abroad stay a week in Finland, visiting and holding presententations, also in psychoanalytically-orientated psychiatric societies and university psychiatric clinics, both in Helsinki, Kuopio, Oulu and Turku.
The scientific programme has been as follows.
| 15 January 1987 | Elina Mäenpää-Reenkola: On the significance of breastfeeding for a woman. |
| 12 February 1987 | Moses Laufer: Psychopathology and the post-oedipal years—Theoretical and clinical issues. |
| 12 March 1987 | Marita Torsti: The givers of life. |
