Being one of the pioneer members of the Finnish Society, Reijo received his psychoanalytic training in Stockholm 1961–65. As a psychiatrist, he had a research interest in the epidemiology of mental health, which was also the theme of his doctoral thesis in 1972. He continued a unique follow-up study of his material during the following decades. He first worked as a member of the staff at the Helsinki University Clinic of Psychiatry. For the last 15 years, he was active as a training analyst and a supervisor, as well as a Professor in Psychotherapy and Medical Psychology. He had been an enthusiastic ornithologist since he was a schoolboy, and was happy to combine the biological approach with the psychoanalytic view in his recent study on the psychology of primate apes.
A malignant tumor of lung and pleura was diagnosed last June. Reijo continued to work with his patients until he was overcome by an allembracing weariness and the final coma. We, his colleagues, pupils and patients feel sorrow. Still more deeply, the loss is felt by his widow Tuula, his children and grandchildren.
