It is suggested that unconscious phantasies make use of nonverbal symbols. Through the processes of the pre-conscious, these symbolic forms interact with discursive symbols of another order, transforming both unconscious and consclous thinking and symbolisation. Interpretations affect unconscious object relations through this transformation. The dream suggests in its discursive form specific unconscious phantasies. These issues and the proposition that we have and can take responsibility for our unconscious phantasies are related to clinical material.
