This year, the biannual Nordic Psychoanalytical. Congress was organized by the Norwegian Psychoanalytic Society, as was the Precongress. Both took place in Bergen. The theme of the Congress was Listening Perspectives in Psychoanalysis. The Precongress – which like the recent precongresses centered on empirical psychoanalytic research – had as its theme Models of the Mind and Psychoanalytic Work and Psychoanalytic Process. The question of the way the listening perspective affects the psychoanalytic process – the way the mode of listening opens up psychic reality – was thus thematized by both the Congress and the Precongress.
The Precongress was organized by Sverre Varvin and Steinar Lorentzen. The number of participants was about 65. The program started with a panel discussion on “Models of the Mind”. The four participants placed the theme in different theoretical perspectives, and concentrated on selective viewpoints. Johannes Lehtonen, Finland, discussed the interrelationship between the body ego and the “dream screen”, as well as the interface between psychoanalysis and neuroscience, focusing on neurophysiological findings related to psychotherapeutic processes. Siri Gullestad, Norway, talked about possible future areas in psychoanalytical empirical research. Gullestad focused on attachement research and the adult attachement interview as a method to study mental structures and mentalizing, as well as symbolizing, processes. Ulf Ståhlberg, Denmark, and Agneta Sandell, Sweden, gave input from recent developments in post-Kleinian theory.
Following the panel, five research projects were presented. David Titelman, Sweden, presented a qualitative study on the subjective experience
