Siv Gunnarson was born on 12 May 1911 and passed away at the age of 88 on 29 December 1999. She had been an invalid for many years. She is survived by two daughters and seven grandchildren.
Siv Gunnarson began her professional career as a child psychiatrist and worked for many years as chief medical officer at the Child Guidance Clinic. The team of child psychologists, sociologists and psychoanalytical consultants she had gathered provided opportunities for all family members to better understand the treatment of the disturbed child for whom they were seeking help. They were thus able to participate in the treatment themselves. This working method requires close cooperation among all those involved and reflects Siv Gunnarson's solicitude for each individual person, her commitment to the family and especially her awareness of and openness to alternative solutions.
After completing her training analysis and becoming a member of the Swedish Psychoanalytic Society, she opened her own psychoanalytic private practice for adults where she worked during the 70s and 80s. During these years, she also participated in the Society's activities as a training analyst and as a Board Member of the Society's Institute during the years from 1970 to 1974.
She held no psychoanalytic lectures nor did she write articles, being of too retiring a disposition for that, but instead worked quietly in the background. On the other hand, her joy in listening to and assimilating her colleagues' lectures, especially during IPA conventions, was unmistakeable. In a small circle of colleagues, she was a sharp, courageous debater.
