This is a highly important and interesting book for all who are learning and teaching how to conduct psychotherapy and psychoanalysis as well as supervision and to reflect about how they work.
The first time, Kahl-Popp did present her pilot study – a study that was awarded by the International Psychoanalytic Association – in an article “Evaluation of Learning in Psychoanalytic Clinical Practice and Supervision” (volume 34, “Never ever stop learning more about supervision,” issue no. 6, 2014 of the Psychoanalytic Inquiry). Now, in this book, the author presents the complete pilot study about supervision, deepening and enriching it with more clinical samples and theoretical as well methodical discussions. She also presents a second study about how candidates of various psychotherapeutic orientations evaluate therapeutic training after finishing it.
The book has five chapters. In Chapter 1 (“The end is the beginning”), the author reports how former candidates closely after finishing their education at different psychotherapy training institutes do evaluate their experience of it. The author interviewed them (using audiotape-recording) twice with some days interval, using their reflections as well as their dreams, how they evaluate their training, what helped – what hindered their learning and deepening of their clinical competence. It is important to mention that she worked with them as research partners – and this continues throughout the book. It is most rewarding to take part in research on both ends as a teacher and as a student. For junior and senior therapists and supervisors it would be fruitful to listen to one’s own audio-recorded therapy or supervisory sessions. In psychotherapeutic practice this should be used more frequently – despite the still present opposition to accept the “presence of a third party.” How her use of the tape recorder has worked with in the sessions is presented in the book.
