In this presentation, I will be considering the question of how the patient transmits his or her unrepresented mind to the analyst. I will do this by using three different concepts: projective identification, reverie, and psychic figurability. I will elaborate the links between these concepts, and I suggest that they reflect different stages in the process of representation. I will also show how, with the help of these concepts, I came to better understand an anxious female patient of mine, my own mind as an analyst, and what happened between us.
