In this clinical paper, the psychoanalytic treatment of a male patient who developed a fatal disease towards the end of his analysis is presented. Four consecutive sessions are described by both parties. Some questions regarding psychoanalytic treatment of a person in an exceptional life situation are raised. To what extent are modifications of technique a result of rational deliberations as opposed to expressions of the analyst’s transference and countertransference feelings? Which technical modifications can or should be used? This paper describes what happened in this situation without giving any professional answers to my handing him a book to read, a book on a therapy where both parties told about working together and my handing him notes from a conference where I presented our analysis at a, for me, critical point in our working together.
