The American Psychoanalytic Association held its 54th Annual Meeting in Detroit from May 5 through 8. Although the advance registration had been somewhat light, the total attendance was over 800; of this total, nearly 500 were non-members.
In addition to an array of discussion groups, papers, and panels, the program included an address by Dr. Margaret Mahler. The joint meeting of the A.Psa.A. and the A.P.A. proved to be, as usual, a highly popular session and was heavily attended. This year's topic was Community Mental Health.
The week preceding the Convention proper, beginning on Monday, May 1, was given over to the work of the large number of committees which carry on the involved administrative work of the Association.
The Board on Professional Standards sat most of the day on Wednesday, and the Executive Council was in session from morning to dinner-time on Thursday. A variety of issues, old and new, were taken up by the Fellows of the Board and the Executive Councillors in these two days of meetings. Many of the items discussed are reported in this issue of the Newsletter. The administrative work of the Convention culminated in the Meeting of Members on Sunday, May 5.
