At the Annual Meeting of the Association in May, Drs. Charles Brenner and Jacob Arlow took over the two top administrative positions in the Association—Dr. Brenner as President and Dr. Arlow as Chairman of the Board on Professional Standards. Their close collaboration during the coming year will continue, on a new plane, an association between the two men that began over 20 years ago. Dr. Arlow was at that time (1945) a student at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Brenner had moved to New York after having started his analytic studies in Boston, and came to the New York Institute to complete his training.
The acquaintanceship which began in their student years developed into a close personal friendship. Following graduation, the two men continued their analytic studies for many years as part of a small study group, and went on to distinguished careers in psychoanalysis.
Their professional collaboration reached its high point in 1964, when they published as co-authors the major theoretical work, Psychoanalytic Concepts and the Structural Theory. Both men have written extensively on their own; Brenner's Elementary Textbook of Psychoanalysis, published in 1955, has become a standard reference and is used widely in the teaching of psychoanalytic concepts at the medical school and resident level. Arlow published, in 1956, The Legacy of Sigmund Freud, a survey of the wide influence of Freud's discoveries, written for the occasion of the Freud Centennial.
The two men have had long and
active careers as teachers. Both are Training Analysts at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute, and both hold medical school Faculty appointments—Dr. Brenner as Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Yale, and Dr. Arlow as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at State University of New York. Dr. Arlow has also been appointed John B. Turner Visiting Professor at Columbia University for 1967-68. (Dr. Brenner is a past President of the New York Society and Dr. Arlow is currently President of the New York Institute.)
They have, in addition, held major posts in the Association. Dr. Brenner has been the Chairman of the Program Committee, a position he held for 7 years, and has served a 4-year term as Councilor-at-Large. Dr. Arlow was President of the Association in 1960-61, and was Chairman of the Committee on Psychoanalytic Education for four years after that.
Their colleagues in the Executive Committee in the coming year will be Drs. Samuel Ritvo, President-Elect, Eugene Pumpian-Mindlin, Secretary, and Edward Joseph, Treasurer.
