Acting on the recommendation of the Membership Committee, the Association at its Annual Meeting in May elected 24 applicants to membership. The new admissions bring the total membership of the Association to 1,190.
In his report to the Executive Council, Dr. Leo Loomie, Chairman of the Membership Committee, commented on the ultimate fate of 70 applicants whose applications were deferred between May, 1959 and December, 1966. He noted, first, that 28 had reapplied and that 23 of the 28 had been admitted; and second, that the reapplication rate varied greatly from Institute to Institute, being high at some and near zero at others.
Dr. Loomie also took up the question of the decline in applications for membership in recent years (Newsletter, Feb., 1967). The expansion of the Association has more than kept pace with population growth in the United States: the Association has increased twice as fast as the population over the past 15 years; but even so there is only one accredited psychoanalyst for every 165,000 of population in the U. S. The Association has grown more rapidly than the medical profession as a whole and has maintained its growth with relation to the American Psychiatric Association, so that over the past 15 years, the ratio of 1 analyst for each 12-13 psychiatrists has remained fairly constant. It is true, however, that there has been a downward trend in the number of applicants for admission to Institutes in the past 5 years, a fact for which no conclusive explanation is yet available.
