An increase in Association dues from $100.00 to $115.00 a year was voted at the Meeting of Members held on Dec. 17, 1967. Acting on a recommendation from the Executive Council, the members approved the increase with one dissenting vote. Since the International Psycho-Analytical Association has raised its dues (which are collected through the APsaA) from $5.00 to $20.00 a year, the dues bill sent to members in January totalled $150. Subscriptions to the Journal of the APsaA and the International Journal of Psychoanalysis, which are included in the total, remained unchanged, and together amount to $15.00.
In explaining the necessity for asking the members' approval of a dues increase, Dr. Edward Joseph, Treasurer, cited several factors which have increased the Association's operating expenses: the constantly growing load of work handled by the Central Office; the increase in salaries and other office expenses; the continual growth in the activities of the many committees which carry on the work of the Association. In asking for a moderate increase in dues at this time, Dr. Joseph stressed that it may be necessary to ask for a further “cost of living” increase before long. He felt, however, and the Executive Council agreed, that it would be preferable to ask for an increase that would cover immediate needs, rather than to propose a larger dues rise in anticipation of future expenses.
The last dues increase occurred in 1959, when the figure was set at $200.00 to cover the expenses of the newly created position of Consultant in Psychoanalytic Education. This position was discontinued in 1961, and dues were dropped to $100.00 in 1963, remaining at this figure until the present increase.
