The Fall Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association will be held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York City, from December 20 through 22.
The scientific program will include four major panels, 14 discussion groups, and three inter-disciplinary colloquia, in addition to an array of individual papers. The panels will again be limited to a half-day each. Their titles and chairmen will be as follows: “Non-Verbal Communication in Early Childhood” — Seymour Lustman, M.D.; “Narcissistic Resistance” — Charles Kligerman, M.D.; “Non-Verbal Communication in the Analysis of Adults” — Leo Rangell, M.D.; “The Primacy of Genitality in the Light of Ego Psychology” — Nathaniel Ross, M.D.
The interdisciplinary colloquia will deal with the subjects of Anthropological Fieldwork (Co-Chairmen, Warner Muensterberger, Ph.D. and Rogert A. LeVine, Ph.D.); Drama Criticism (Chairman, Philip Weissman, M.D.); and Contemporary Social Work (Chairman, George H. Wiedeman, M.D.). The Discussion Groups will cover a wide range of topics in the areas of clinical practice, research, and applied psychoanalysis. As in the past, they will be held on the Thursday afternoon and evening preceding the formal opening of the Convention, and will have limited, pre-registered participation.
The Sunday morning program will begin with an address by Dr. Martin Stein, entitled “Sexual Differences in
the Development of Character.” This will be followed by the Business Meeting of Members. The final event of the Convention, on Sunday afternoon, will be a panel, open to the public, on “Applications of Psychoanalysis Beyond the Therapeutic,” with George H. Pollock, M.D. as Chairman.
The work of the Convention will actually begin early in the week of December 15, with meetings of most of the active committees of the Association. The Board on Professional Standards will convene on Wednesday, December 18, followed by the Executive Council the next day. An important item on the agenda of the Council will be a consideration of the results of the referendum held this fall on the question of recognition for a group of lay training analysts. The business meeting on Sunday, in addition to dealing with a variety of other matters, will hear the results of the mail ballot vote for new officers of the Association.
