A number of members of the APsaA have written to the Association's President to voice opinions about the Executive Council's May, 1970, statement on the Cambodia crisis (Newsletter, June, 1970). Among the dozen or so members who wrote, about half protested council's action and the rest applauded it. (Three affiliate Societies reported that they had independently protested the Cambodia invasion.)
Opposition to Council's action centered on two issues: the belief that a scientific body should not take stands on political issues, and the feeling that Council should not have acted without consulting the membership.
In a lengthy reply to those who expressed these views, President Solnit gave a detailed account of the steps that led up to Council's action. He agreed fully that Council has an obligation to consult the membership before taking important actions, but at the same time pointed out that in exceptional situations it is important that Council have the latitude to act promptly and not be immobilized by the time-consuming process of soliciting the members' opinions.
Council's action will be reviewed at the Fall Meeting.
