The 1971 Fall Meeting of the Association will be held at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York, during the week of December 13. The scientific program will begin on December 16 with the Thursday afternoon discussion groups and extend through Sunday, the 19th.
The executive bodies and many committees will meet all through the early part of the week. A number of important issues, particularly in the area of membership qualification, will be coming up for debate. Most prominent of these is the final report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Policies and Problems of Membership (chaired by Dr. Jay Katz), whose preliminary recommendations (Newsletter, February, 1971) have stirred wide controversy. (A Letter to the Editor dealing with this committee's proposals appears on page 2.)
There will also be discussion of the final report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Recognition to Research Graduates (Chairman, Dr. George Pollock); this report, which recommends that graduates of Research Training Programs be eligible for full membership in the APsaA, will probably be on the agenda of the Meeting of Members.
The complicated problems of disaffiliation of Societies and disapproval of Institutes have reached the stage of a final report from an Ad Hoc Committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Robert M. Gilliland.
This is a Joint Committee which will report to both Board and Council.
The final reports of two other Committees are scheduled for action by the Executive Council: Dr. Heinz Kohut's Ad Hoc Committee on Scientific Activities, and the Ad Hoc Committee on Ethics, chaired by Dr. Edward M. Daniels.
The Association will elect a President-Elect and 2 Councillors-at-Large. The candidates for President-Elect are Drs. Burness E. Moore and Edward M. Weinshel; for Councillors-at-Large, Drs. Homer C. Curtis, Paul Gray, Sylvan Keiser and Calvin F. Settlage.
At a plenary session on Saturday morning, the immediate Past-President, Dr. Albert J. Solnit, will deliver an address entitled “A View of Theory-Building in Psychoanalysis: Aggression.” An unusual plenary session is scheduled for 5 P.M. on Friday: Dr. Carl E. Schorske, Professor of History at Princeton, will speak on “Politics and Patricide in Freud's ‘Interpretation of Dreams’: A Historian's View.”
In addition to an array of individual papers, there will be panel discussions on “Learning Theory and Psychoanalytic Theory” (Chairman: Dr. George H. Pollock), “Methodology of Psychoanalytic Biography” (Chairman: Dr. Charles Kligerman), and “The Experience of Time” (Chairman: Dr. Hans W. Leowald).
A plenary session panel on Sunday morning, sponsored jointly by the APsaA and the Association for Child Psychoanalysis, and chaired by Dr. Albert J. Solnit, will be devoted to the separation-individuation experience.
The scientific program will conclude on Sunday afternoon and early evening with a series of interdisciplinary colloquia and seminars.
Convention registrants should note that the Cocktail Party will be held on Friday, December 17, instead of Saturday.
