Plans for the National Conference on Psychoanalytic Education and Research are moving forward rapidly. The National Planning Committee (NPC), chaired by Dr. Herbert Gaskill, aims to convene the week-long conference in the Fall of 1973, at a location still to be determined.
The NPC intends to organize the work of the conference around eight topics, or “areas”:
1. The tripartite system of psychoanalytic education; 2. the Anna Freud concept of the full-time institute; 3. the age problem; 4. relation of psychoanalysis to universities; 5. relation of psychoanalysis to social issues; 6. relation of psychoanalysis to current changes in medical and psychiatric education; 7. partial training and partial degrees; and 8. psychoanalytic research.
A preparatory commission will be set up for each area; the commission will have the task of studying its area and preparing position papers in advance of the conference. Funds are being sought from the NIMH to defray the costs of the conference.
