Dr. Burness E. Moore, of New York, was elected President-Elect of the American Psychoanalytic Association at the Business Meeting held on Saturday, December 18, 1971. At the same time Drs. Sylvan Keiser and Calvin F. Settlage were elected Councillors-at-Large.
Dr. Moore was Secretary of the APsaA from 1969-71. He has in the past been a Fellow of the Board and an Executive Councillor. He chaired the Committee on Public Information from 1962-1968; while in this position he advocated the creation of the Newsletter and was instrumental in bringing this idea to fruition in 1967. He has served on the Newsletter staff since that time.
A Training Analyst at the N. Y. Psychoanalytic Institute, Dr. Moore has published papers on a variety of clinical and theoretical problems, including frigidity and female sexuality. He is co-author of the Glossary
of Psychoanalytic Terms and Concepts.
The Fall Meeting of the Association, held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, December 16 through 19, 1971, attracted a registration of some 1500. In addition to a full program of panels and individual papers, large numbers of registrants attended the Thursday evening discussion groups and a number of interdisciplinary seminars and colloquia.
Two plenary lectures attracted considerable interest. On Friday, December 17, a historian from Princeton, Dr. Carl E. Schorske, presented a paper entitled “Politics and Patricide in Freud's Interpretation of Dreams: A Historian's View.” On Saturday morning, immediately following the Business Meeting of the Association, Dr. Albert J. Solnit, the immediate Past President, presented a paper entitled “Agression: A View of Theory Building in Psychoanalysis.” Dr. Solnit's lecture attracted particular interest and there was an overflow audience in the large Starlight Roof of the Waldorf.
The Business Meeting, which again was held on Saturday, was particularly well attended, owing, perhaps, to the fact that it was this time scheduled as the first activity of the morning, preceding instead of following the Solnit plenary lecture. The larger attendance permitted a fuller discussion of the issues at hand.
A number of major matters taken up at meetings of the Board on Professional Standards and the Executive Council reached the floor at the Business Meeting on Saturday. The discussion and actions taken on the final report of the Ad Hoc Committee on Policies and Problems of Membership aroused the greatest interest among members. This, along with other matters that were discussed, is reported elsewhere in this issue.
